“Had I been regularly backing up, I wouldn’t have had to worry about losing more than a year’s worth of photos, covering the entire lifespan of my daughter, or documents and emails that I had stored in no other location.” Mat Honan, Gizmodo.
One of the more alarming tech stories of 2012 occurred back in August, when a hacker used some simple social engineering to access a tech reporter’s iCloud account and proceeded to wipe the entire content of his phone, laptop and Google account.
Not only does it highlight the importance of securing your digital accounts with unique passwords, it also really drives home the importance of making sure that you regularly back up your data using what we call the “Belt & Braces” approach.
From both a personal and a business perspective, making sure that your data is replicated to more than one location is important for making sure you can recover it in the event of theft or disaster. “Belt & Braces” means employing more than one of the following backup methodologies:
- Backup to local external hard drive(s).
- Take backups offsite, either physically taken offsite by rotating external hard drives, or replicate data to another office or home location over the internet.
- Backup to a Public or Private Cloud “Offsite Data Storage” repository.
This is an area that we are actively working on, to bring you more streamlined solutions and product offerings that are easier to manage. If you have concerns about your backup strategy and would like some advice, feel free to contact us.
